    Becoming An Online DJ

    • 1). Purchase the proper equipment. Make sure that you have a DJ mixer. DJ mixers allow you to fade in and out between two tracks easily. Purchase a digital audio workstation to remix tracks and to create mixes. A digital audio workstation allows you to manipulate audio,crucial when remixing a track. Ableton Live 8 is a good example of a digital audio workstation that allows you to remix tracks.

    • 2). Connect your DJ mixer to your computer and open your digital audio workstation. If you have any additional MIDI controllers, hook them up as well. DJ mixers are usually connected to the computer through USB or MIDI cables. This means that it will be automatically detected. If you are planning on remixing a song, drag the song onto a blank clip in your digital audio workstation. In Ableton Live 8, click and drag the track onto an empty clip in the column titled "Audio".

    • 3). Use effects within the digital audio workstation in order to alter the song or build tension. Many DJs like to do mashups, or combine two different songs to form a single track. You can click and drag as many different tracks as you like into blank clips within your digital audio workstation.

    • 4). Use the equalizer knobs located on your DJ mixer in order to create a balanced mix. The equalizer can cut or boost frequencies that are taking up too much room in the final mix. Typically, there are three knobs on your DJ mixer that control the equalizer. These knobs are titled "Bass," "Mids" and "Treble." The "Bass" knob controls the low end frequencies. The "Mids" knob controls the mid-range frequencies. The "Treble" knob controls the high-end frequencies. To use the equalizer, turn one of these knobs to the left to cut out a certain frequency or turn one to the right to boost certain frequencies. Use your ears to determine whether or not a mix sounds balanced.

    • 5). Press "Play" to hear your remix. In most digital audio workstations, you can simply press the spacebar. If you are satisfied, save your track as an MP3. In Ableton Live 8, click "File," then click "Export." Select "MP3" from the drop-down box that appears.

    • 6). Create a musician profile on MySpace.com. Once you have created a musician account, click on the "Edit Profile" link on the top bar and then click the link that says "Music Manager." You can upload the track you have just created by clicking the "Browse" button and selecting the track from your hard drive.

    • 7). Promote your MySpace page. You can see how many people have listened to your track by looking at the bottom right corner of your music player. If your track was good, your fans will be wanting more. Continue to update this page every time you make a nice track.
