A plastic laminate counter top is made from a plastic-coated compound. These countertop options come in many different styles and colors, and therefore offer a range of possibilities. Cost-effective and suitable for nearly any home installation, they have become popular. There are few limits to how you install these counters. - There are a variety of color options in laminate countertops. Almost any pattern, including stone and wood imitations or solid colors, are available. If you love granite but want to save money, choose a granite-patterned plastic laminate. These are available in several granite patterns, from tan and black to dark gray and black. Keep in mind that a solid black laminate is always an option, but take caution. These colors show scratches more than lighter colors. Even though they do not show stains or dirt quite as readily, a permanent scratch is difficult, if not impossible, to remove from a laminate counter.
- Once you choose a color, select the edge style. There are two main styles of edges available, and each one offers a few chances to be decorative. The options are straight and round edges. In a round edge, the edge of the countertop is shaped or curved. The countertop laminate is glued onto the shaped edge after it is finished. If you have children, use this edge to reduce the chance of bumps and scrapes. There are different ways to curve the edges. Sloping edges, blunt edges and semi-circle round edges are among the ideas from which to choose. In fact, the edge may be shaped anyway you like.
- A straight edge is one that has a miter cut along the edge, meaning the entire edge of the counter has a simple 90-degree angle. With this edge, use one of several different bevel cuts to finish the countertop after the laminate is installed. A 45-degree bevel is cut into both the adjoining pieces of laminate using a 45-degree bit. This creates a simple, consistent edge all the way around the counter. Another option is to bevel only the top sheet of laminate, so the end of the bevel lies flush on top of the laminate piece that wraps around the edge. This creates a smaller edge line and creates less definition for a smoother look.
Another idea is to apply a different pattern laminate around the straight edge to add a decorative touch to your counter. You can also paint and pattern onto the laminate to add definition and color. Some manufacturers offer custom carving for an added fee.
