Pick the right size board. There are many size charts for new boarders who don't know how big their boards should be. This is the sizing chart exileskimboards.com provides on its website:
XS 95-130 lbs 19.25" x 49.75"
Small 105-160 lbs 19.75" x 51.50"
Medium/Small 125-180 lbs 20.00" x 51.75"
Medium 145-190 lbs 20.25" x 52.15"
Medium/Large 160-200 lbs 20.40" x 52.25"
Large 170-220 lbs 20.60" x 50.50"
Extra Large 195+ lbs 20.94" x 53.31" - 2). Select the material for your board. This may depend on how serious you are at skimboarding. There are many different materials used today:
E-Glass (essentially fiberglass) is commonly used in beginner and intermediate boards because it's relatively inexpensive. It is not as strong or as stiff as other materials but is good for beginners.
Texalium, E-Glass coated with aluminum, provides some extra stiffness but it is mostly used for style points, the aluminum sparkles like diamonds in the beach sun.
S-Glass is structurally reinforced fiberglass and is 30 percent stronger than E-Glass as well as 15 percent stiffer. For these perks you will being paying double the cost of an E-Glass board.
Carbons Fibre boards are very strong, very stiff and made from the same materials as Formula I race cars. Carbon Fibre is very expensive, if this board is the kind you would like, expect to pay a lot.
Polyester Resin is the most commonly used resin for skimboards. It is the same material used on many surfboards and rides very smooth.
Epoxy resin is normally used in very high-end skimboards. They ride very smooth and are stronger and stiffer than polyester resin boards. Since the quality is better, expect to pay more for boards of this material.
Wood boards usually have some kind of resin coating, either epoxy or polyester. Because if this, it is not too difficult to make a wooden skimboard yourself. - 3). Pick a board that fits your style. Skimboards come with a variety of graphics on them. It's up to you to wade through the generic boards that populate the market and pick one that's as unique as you are. One way to find a board that is truly unique is to find a company that takes your ideas and puts them onto your board.
