Video on the iPad
There a few ways to get the video on your iPad and the first choice is whether you convert the video first and pass the file to your iPad or do you stream the video across using wifi from your desktop computer. If you have a limited amount of available space on your iPad as it is already getting full with all of your music and other content, then you might choose the streaming option. It really isn't necessary to buy the top of the range 64GB model when you can stream things and keep your files in the cloud. If you do want to actually have the file on the iPad because you prefer it that way or the wifi is not fast enough, then you may have to use software to do a conversion to one of the formats that the iPad will play. It will not play avi or wmv files for example.

There is a good option with Zumocast with excellent ease of use. It is easy to run the server application on the desktop computer and find the movie you want to see on the iPad using the companion application. It is not long, after a little buffering, before you are watching whatever film you have chosen. AirVideo application does much the same, although it does have the extra feature in that it will do a really sweet conversion job to exactly the right format for your movie, that you can download onto your iPad ready to watch when not able to do streaming. It is great to have a video conversion tool that you don't have to think about because it is set up already for producing files optimised perfectly for the iPad.

Streaming the video residing on your iMac by sending it to the iPad over WiFi can be taken a step further by using the VGA connector to hook up to the TV and see on a bigger screen. An important consideration is the quality of the picture of course, and whether or not you are converting and moving the files or streaming them, the images are sufficiently good on the iPad screen.
The natural resolution of the iPad version 1 is 1078 by 720 and you can convert your video to fit although you should be aware that with widescreen movies you will get the letterbox effect with areas of black top and bottom of the video. Not really a problem despite this you will still enjoy the movie on the iPad screen.

Scaling up the video
What about HDMI though? Can it be used with an iPad. Yes you can connect to your TV with HDMI but you will need extra hardware to be able to do so.

There are devices that are designed to take the video and audio signals from the iPad and upscale it to digital HDMI output of a wide-range of HDTV and PC resolutions, up to 1080p. They can automatically sense the native resolution of the display and scale the output to match it. The converter will take the audio signal from the iPad and embed it into the HDMI signal output, so that user is able to connect up both audio and video though one cable.

So you can see that there a number of choices you can make that will allow you to get the best from your combination of electronic devices including the iPad. You can have the big screen at a distance or the iPad on your lap and more up close and personal, relaxing on the sofa which ever way you go with it.
