How to Remove Ceramic Tile With a Chipping Hammer
- 1). Clear the room totally of any furniture. Cover any cupboards with tarps, or tape paper over their surfaces for protection.
- 2). Put on safety goggles, a good dust mask, ear protectors, long pants and a long-sleeve shirt. Open windows for ventilation to help dissipate the dust that will be spit into the air by the action of the chipping hammer.
- 3). Insert a tile chisel into the end of the chipping hammer and grease it per manufacturer's directions.
- 4). Take a hammer and hand chisel and chisel into a grout line to break it. Use a screwdriver to pop the grout out. Set the hand chisel at an angle and hammer the end of it until a tile pops up or cracks. Keep hammering until one tile is chiseled out.
- 5). Pick up the chipping hammer. Place the tip of the tile chisel at the base of a tile adjacent to the space where the first tile was manually chiseled out. Press the trigger on the chipping hammer and start chiseling up one tile after another from the floor.
