- 1). Log-in to Windows as an administrator.
- 2). Click "Start" and type "regedit" into the "Search" box and press "Enter". If you are using a version of windows released prior to Windows Vista, click "Start" and "Run" and type "regedit" into the "Open" box and press "Enter". The Registry Editor opens.
- 3). Click "File" and "Export".
- 4). Click "All" in the "Export Range" panel and then click "Save". Your registry is now backed up. This is important because using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious system-wide problems. With the registry backed up, you can undo any mistakes that you may make.
- 5). Click on the registry entry that you want to edit and then click "Edit". You can use the drop-down menu to edit the registry entry. For example, you can change the registry permissions, modify the value name and data, and delete the registry entry.
- 6). Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
