Direct TV DVR Failure & Symptoms

104 30
    • DirecTV provides satellite reception and live television recording through the use of advanced receivers and digital video recorders (DVRs). Although the newer DVR style receivers from DirecTV are more advanced than their non-recording counterparts, they can still experience technical issues and even occasionally break down. Fortunately, there are solutions for some of the most common errors experienced by DirecTV DVR owners.

    No Welcome Screen

    • During setup or sometimes after a power surge or circuit breaker reset, the DirecTV DVR might fail to present the "Welcome" screen when initially powered on. Remedy this failing by first checking the input selection. Use the "Input," "Selection" or "Source" button on your remote to make sure the television is set to the same input that your DVR is plugged into. Next, check the back of the DVR and television for loose, frayed or incorrectly connected wires and repair any damages or mistakes. If your DVR is connected via the S-Video or digital composite A/V connections, the output resolution of your DVR may be set higher than is compatible with the television. Set the DVR's video output to 480i using the front control panel on the DVR. If picture is not restored using these methods, contact a certified repair technician for support.

    Satellite Info Screen

    • Occasionally, often during setup, the DVR will become locked on the "Setup" screen. This can be quickly repaired by pressing the "DirecTV" button and the selecting "Messages and Setup." From here, select "Settings" and then activate the "Satellite and Off Air Antenna" menu. In this menu, select "Reset Satellite Information." This will reset the satellite information and solve any problems that may have happened during the satellite information loading process. Once pressed, a warning screen will pop up, mentioning that this action should not be taken unless instructed by a customer service representative. According to the DirecTV HD-DVR System manual, "in this instance, it is safe to proceed past this screen without consulting Customer Care."

    Messages

    • Occasionally, while watching the DirecTV DVR, a screen message may appear such as "Please Call Customer Service X721." At this point, the channel will no longer be viewable. When experiencing this problem, make sure the channel you are trying to watch is part of your viewing package. If so, perform a power reset on the DVR by first turning it off and then unplugging the device from the wall. Wait at least 15 seconds before plugging it back in and powering the DVR on. If the channel is still unavailable, contact DirecTV customer support for assistance.
