Music Organizations and Personalities
By now most of you are aware of the massive destruction in the Caribbean and the east coast caused by hurricane Sandy. New York and New Jersey declared a state of emergency days before the onslaught of Sandy; schools were closed, the subway was shut down, airlines cancelled flights and those in low-lying areas were ordered to evacuate. At the time of this writing, hurricane Sandy has left in its wake death, unimaginable destruction, displacement and catastrophic flooding in New York and its suburbs.
It is during times like these when we must come together and lend a helping hand to the victims of this calamity. There are many organizations in your area that accepts donations and need volunteers. There's Americares, Feeding America, Save the Children, Salvation Army, The Red Cross, World Vision and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). You can check out the State VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) Directory to find specific organizations in your area.
Music Foundations/Organizations
There are also some music foundations that are mobilizing to raise funds for the victims of hurricane Sandy. Music for Relief, an organization of artists, music professionals and music fans, has remained active in their efforts to offer disaster relief and minimize global warming. They have partnered with International Medical Corps in Haiti. and Save the Children in the United Sates. Find out how you can help by visiting the Music for Relief Web site.
Speaking of Save the Children, they had this great idea of recording the heartbeats of children in need and then turning it into a song recorded by One Republic.
You can help by buying and downloading the song from iTunes. Brilliant!
Artists
There are also prominent artists who are extending a helping hand to the hurricane victims, such as musician Jon Bon Jovi who, in a recent interview, expressed his desire to help through his Soul Foundation and Soul Kitchen Restaurant.
On the other hand, artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Mariah Carey, Prince, Pink, Carrie Underwood and Tim McGraw are supporters of ASPCA, among other charities.
Social Networking Sites
On social networking sites such as Twitter, music personalities have expressed their thoughts about the devastation caused by Sandy.
Justin Bieber - everyone dealing with the hurricane up north be safe
Mariah Carey - Everybody on the east coast, please stay safe!!
Miranda Cosgrove - I'm thinking of all the people who have been affected by hurricane sandy. #myheartgoesouttoyou
Adam Lambert - Sending strength to east coasters. Sandy cant break our spirit!
Bruno Mars - Stay strong east coast fam
Carrie Underwood - Wow...Sandy is one mean lady! Lots of thoughts, prayers and love going out to all in her path...you guys stay strong!
Business Establishments
Business establishments have also stepped up to help the victims of hurricane Sandy; such as RadioShack which reportedly donated $50,000 to the Red Cross. However, you don't need to have a foundation, belong to an organization, own a business or be famous to lend a helping hand. Visit your local relief centers or charitable organizations and find out how you can contribute; every bit of help matters.
Volunteer
Here are links to the organizations I mentioned above. There are other organizations you can donate to or volunteer your time with, just make sure it's legitimate before doing so because, unfortunately, heartless scammers still abound during times like these.
