How to Make Tunics
- 1). Cut ½ yard off of the fabric; set aside. Measure the distance between your shoulders and add 16 inches. Cut the width of the remaining 2-yard fabric to equal this measurement. The fabric should now be two yards long and about 32 inches wide.
- 2). Fold the fabric in half horizontally and lay the fabric on a flat surface. Measure down 10 inches from the top folded end, which will make the sleeve of the garment. Draw a horizontal line 8 inches toward the middle of the fabric on both sides of the fabric. At the inside corner of the horizontal line, draw a vertical line all the way down to the bottom edge of the fabric. Repeat for the other side of the fabric. You should now have two rectangles blocked off on either side of the fabric. Cut out the rectangles on both sides of the fabric to make a "T" shape with the remaining fabric.
- 3). Mark a middle circle from the middle of the top fold of the fabric with the chalk. Cut out the circle with scissors to make the neckline.
- 4). Face the printed or "right" sides of the fabric together. Typically, the right side of the fabric is the side that you will eventually want showing on the outside when the garment is finished. Sew the sides of the tunic together. Fold the edges of the sleeve over ½ of an inch. Sew the hem closed with the sewing machine. Repeat for the other sleeve and the bottom hem of the tunic.
- 5). Cut a 4-inch thick strip of fabric down the length of the ½ yard strip. Fold the edges under ¼ of an inch on all sides of the strip and sew into place.
- 6). Wrap the strip around the collar of the tunic. Sew the strip to the collar to make a collar for the tunic. You may have to cut the strip into two or three pieces to get it to fit around the circular shape of the collar.
