Floating Styrofoam Crafts
- Use a Styrofoam bowl or ball to make a reflective dish for your centerpiece or pool party. If you can't find a Styrofoam bowl, cut a ball in half and hollow it out using pottery tools. Paint the bowl or ball with acrylic paint to make it more decorative. Cut a mirror tile with a glass cutter and insert into the bowl. Place Christmas lights or another light source over the bowl or on the ceiling for the mirror to reflect the light attractively. For added decoration, place a tea light candle on the mirror to further reflect the light.
- Make floating Styrofoam shapes to float candles on the surface of your pool or hot tub. Cut a thin Styrofoam board into various shapes to support the candles. Hollow out a small circle with pottery tools to hold the candle. Use a flower- or heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut the shapes into the Styrofoam board. Color your shape with bright colorful acrylic paint.and cover it with a nonflammable finishing spray. Battery-operated LED or tea-light candles can be placed into the hollow of the board. Place your candle holders into the pool at sunset for a romantic atmosphere.
- This simple craft will add an additional kick to a poolside party. Use a thick board of Styrofoam foam to make a colorful floating flower arrangement. Cut a large hole in a piece of Styrofoam and layer it on top of a solid piece and skewer them together with torches. Paint the Styrofoam with acrylic paint or spray paint to disguise the white foam. Place florist's foam inside the hollowed-out board. Insert colorful fake tropical flowers into the florist's foam until it is completely covered. Continue to add vines and grasses to the Styrofoam using hot glue. For a temporary but scented arrangement, use real flowers.
- You can also make a floating tabletop using a thick Styrofoam board. Cut curves into the board and smooth the top for a level surface. If you are going to use the board for holding drinks, trace circles onto the board and cut hollows into the Styrofoam board. Don't cut the whole way through the board, but leave enough room for glass bottles or plastic cups. Color the tabletop with acrylic or spray paint. Place it into your pool or hot tub for a place to hold your drinks, play cards or play games with your friends.
