  The Apple iPod debuted in October 2001, according to iPodHistory.com. Originating as a portable music player, the device has evolved to include more features. Variations of the iPod include the iTouch, often called "an iPhone without the phone" since it looks and functions much the same as an iPhone. The iTouch offers features ranging from the practical to simple amusements.
  
  

Apps

• The iTouch allows users to download applications, also called "apps," to their device. Apps are available via iTunes, Apple's software for managing iPods. Thousands of apps are offered at the iTunes Store, with more added daily. Users can find applications for practically any interest or need. Social network addicts can use FaceBook and Twitter apps to keep connected. Theologians have assorted Bibles and Bible study apps to work with. Friends dining out can easily figure out how to divide the check with an app that does the math for them.
  
  

Internet

• The iTouch offers users the ability to access the Internet. Wireless plans for the iTouch are available through AT&T. For those not wishing to purchase a plan, the device accesses the web via WiFi. Online access allows iTouch users to access email on their device. They can also visit websites using the Safari browser.
  
  

Games

• The iTouch makes a large variety of games available. For instance, lovers of classic arcade games have a number of Pac-Man variations to choose from. Versions of board games such as Scrabble and Monopoly are also available. Additionally, numerous iTouch games allow users to play others online.
  
  

Media

• The iTouch features the ability to download media such as music and video. Customers may purchase items at the iTunes store, but may also import files from other sources. For instance, MP3 music files on the user's computer hard drive are easily brought into iTunes by clicking on the "File" menu, selecting "Library" and choosing "Import Playlist". Users then browse the hard drive to find the audio file to import. Users may also download video such as movies and television programs. Many popular shows are available at iTunes. Device owners also have the ability to add their own videos to their iTouch. The iTouch will only play videos in an MP4 format, so users may need a third-party software program to convert their video in order for it to work.
