How to Keep a Sofa From Slipping on Hardwood

    • 1). Place an area rug down beneath the sofa. A rug gives your sofa traction to stay in one place while also giving your living room or den an additional decorative element.

    • 2). Fit the sofa legs with white, rubber furniture caps. Rubber furniture caps prevent the sofa from sliding. White, rubber pads do not leave streaks on your hardwood as black rubber pads can.

    • 3). Look beneath the sofa for wheels. A wheeled sofa is easier to move from one location to another, but it also slides across hardwood flooring much easier than the nonwheeled variety. If your sofa has wheels, turn the sofa over and lock each of the wheels. This helps your sofa remain steady when you sit down.

    • 4). Place a heavy piece of furniture, such as a solid oak end table or full cedar chest, behind the sofa. To visitors, this appears as nothing more than a decorating tactic, but the furniture prevents your sofa from slipping backward when you take a seat.

    • 5). Cut a nonslip rug pad into circles the same size as the bottom of the sofa's legs. Turn the sofa over on its side. Glue or tape the circular pads to the bottom of the sofa's legs to keep them from slipping.

    • 6). Rearrange the room. Position the sofa against a wall. The sofa cannot slide backward if it is against the wall.
