Benefits of Strength Training As You Age

103 2
Regular strength training has a lot more benefits than just healthy muscle mass.
Two other important benefits are preventing osteoporosis and heart disease.
You can reduce the risk of heart disease (as well as other chronic disease) by keeping inflammation low, and reducing visceral fat is a major component to this equation.
The belly fat that builds up on your abdomen causing a "beer belly" look is visceral fat.
It surrounds your heart, liver, and muscles.
Exercise helps to lower the risk of heart disease because of its ability to lower inflammation throughout your body, and is the most effective weapon against visceral fat accumulation.
How does it do it? You burn more calories the more muscle you have because they use calories throughout the day even if you are resting or sleeping.
So, if you build more muscle, you naturally increase the amount of calories your body uses every day, thus reducing fat stores.
As for the inflammation, exercise naturally lowers CRP (C-reactive protein), which is an indicator of inflammation.
Higher levels of CRP puts your body at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, and is suggested to be a better predictor of future heart attacks than cholesterol.
How to Reduce Osteoporosis with Strength Training Weight-bearing exercise has been shown to be effective in the fight against osteoporosis.
One thing none of us want to have to do is take a pill or drug to improve bone density, as more often than not drugs cause more long term damage than good.
Bones are surprisingly porous and soft, but as we get older they become less dense; thus more brittle, and more so if we are inactive.
Resistance workouts combat this effect since putting more tension on the muscles increases pressure on the bones, which respond by constantly repairing and creating new fresh bone.
This reduces your chances of developing osteoporosis.
