- 1). Lay the French door on a flat surface. Clean each of the panes with glass cleaner followed by rubbing alcohol.
- 2). Cover the wood around each of the panes with painter's tape to protect it from the paint.
- 3). Stand the door upright and tape a template onto the backside of each of the glass panes. Your template may be an abstract stained glass design or an image that you like. Look for templates in coloring books, stained glass pattern books and from online sources.
- 4). Lay the door back down with the clean glass facing up. Outline the pattern in the templates with self-adhesive leading strips. The leading strips are flexible and resemble the lead lines in a real work of stained glass. Look for self-adhesive leading strips along with stained glass paint in your local craft store or from online retailers.
- 5). Fill in between the leading strips with stained glass paint. Apply the paint directly from the container by squeezing it onto the glass. Stained glass paint dries translucent with similar properties to actual stained glass.
- 6). Pop any air bubbles in the stained glass paint with a toothpick. The air bubbles occur naturally and are easy to spot after you apply the paint. Allow the stained glass paint to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 7). Remove the painter's tape and the templates from the panes on the French door.
