Removing Tile Adhesive From Flooring
- 1). Open windows and doors in the room in which you will be working. This will provide proper air ventilation during the adhesive removal process.
- 2). Put on a pair of rubber gloves and a dust mask.
- 3). Loosen the tile adhesive by applying methylene chloride paint remover directly onto the tile adhesive. Follow all directions and warnings printed on the label of the paint remover. Pour a little methylene chloride into a small plastic container. Dip a paint brush into the container and coat the adhesive with the chloride.
- 4). Scrape the adhesive from the flooring with a paint scraper. Wipe the paint scraper clean with a paper towel and discard the loosened adhesive.
- 5). Combine 1 gallon of lukewarm water with a few drops of a mild dishwashing liquid. Saturate a cloth in the mixture and wash the flooring to remove any adhesive residue. Allow the floor to air dry for several hours.
- 1). Rent, purchase or borrow an electric hammer chisel. The chisel must be equipped with a scraper blade. An electric hammer chisel is available for rent or purchase at most home improvement centers.
- 2). Read and follow all of the manufacturers' instructions and warnings for the electric hammer chisel.
- 3). Put on a pair of safety goggles.
- 4). Attach the scraper blade to the chisel. Switch the machine to the on position when ready.
- 5). Place the blade of the scraper at the edge of the tile adhesive. The scraper blade will move in a back-and-forth motion and push the adhesive from the concrete.
- 6). Remove the loosened tile adhesive with a broom and dust pan.
