Installing a New Vanity Top
- 1). Slide a utility knife between the back splash and the drywall. Move the utility knife along the back splash to break the adhesive bond. Put a putty knife into the space and pull gently to loosen the back splash. Slide the tip of a pry bar between the drywall and back splash. Pull gently to remove the back splash.
- 2). Open the cabinet doors. Look under the counter to determine if the existing counter is attached with screws. Remove the screws.
- 3). Slide a utility knife between the counter and the cabinet. Move the utility knife around the perimeter of the cabinet to loosen the adhesive. Slide a pry bar between the two and lift the counter top from the cabinet.
- 4). Measure the cabinet dimensions. Cut a piece of ¾-inch plywood to match these dimensions and set it on top of the cabinet. Drive deck screws through the plywood into the cabinet to attach the plywood to the cabinet. Skip this step if there is already plywood in place and it is in good shape.
- 5). Find the sink template for the sink. Trace around the outside of the template with a pencil. Cut the plywood with a jigsaw to accommodate the sink.
- 6). Spread construction adhesive on the drywall where the back splash will be placed. Set the back splash into the wall and hold in place with low-tack painter's tape to prevent it from shifting. Skip this step if your vanity top has a back splash already attached to the top.
- 7). Spread a thin line of construction adhesive on top of the plywood. Lift and place the new vanity in the adhesive. Clamp the vanity to the plywood with C-clamps. Let the adhesive dry.
- 8). Apply construction adhesive to the lip of the sink. Drop the sink into the space in the vanity top. Let the adhesive dry. Skip this step if the vanity you purchased has an already attached sink.
