The Top Five States for UFO Sightings
- As of April 2011, California is listed as the state with the most reported sightings. A total of 8,010 people report witnessing sky-borne objects in the shape of triangles, disks, diamonds and cylinders for durations of anything from 30 seconds to 45 minutes. According to The Los Angeles Times, the most famous sighting is referred to as the "Battle of Los Angeles" and occurred on Feb. 25, 1942, when radar stations picked up an unidentified object in the skies over Santa Monica Bay, resulting in antiaircraft guns firing about 1,500 rounds in an attempt to down it.
- The skies of Washington are reported to have been visited by 3,493 UFOs, as of April 2011. According to the UFO Evidence website, Washington contains two particular hotspots for sightings. Residents of King County reported 621 UFO sightings between 1947 and 2005, while residents of Yakima County reported 227 sightings. In 1947, Harold A. Dahl claimed that his dog was killed and that his son was injured by otherworldly visitors, in an episode that came to be known as the Maury Island Incident.
- The clear Texan skies no doubt assisted the 3,189 people who claim to have seen UFOs over the state, as of April 2011. Texas has a long association with extra terrestrials. Time magazine reports the purported case of a UFO crash-landing in Aurora in 1897. The tiny spaceman recovered from the downed craft is said to be buried in the local cemetery. More recently, in 1951, professors and students from Texas Tech University reported seeing lights repeatedly flying over the city of Lubbock.
- Florida is attributed with 3,020 sightings, as of April 2011. Reports range from accounts of speedy orange spheres to motionless large gray rectangles, lasting for between 10 seconds and 55 minutes.
- As of April 2011, 2526 residents of New York State reported seeing UFOs. The most heavily reported sighting was in 2010 where hundreds of New Yorkers claimed to have seen formations of round objects in the sky above Manhattan. According to Fox News, one man has since set up a 24-hour UFO hotline, resulting in about two dozen sightings.
