A core workout should not be made of a bunch of exercises throw together that in th end just make the abs look good. Training the core should be a program centered around making the whole body stronger and improve your posture. Making the chance for injury that much smaller by having your own innner belt. Core training should be like all of your training, focused on building stronger muscles.

To build stronger muscles you have to train the muscle with weight that challenge the body in push harder than the last time. Progressive overload. Not endless reps on the sit board. Let's face a fact you cannot paint a wall if you do not have the wall in the first place. Meaning you can lose all th eweight in the world, but if there is no muscle then you wasted a lot of tome to show of your spine and ribs.

The exercise that are listed are going to work the whole core, they are going to hit the abs, inner abd outer wall, lower back, and the obliques. The core is not just the six pack in the front of your stomach. The are the muscle all around your waist. The health of your spine depends on a health and strong core.

The first exercise is a very basic and natural movement. The suit case deadlift. Which is just a deadlift with the weight beside you. Take a loaded bar and place it on the floor, stand beside it and squat down and grab it with one hand. Now stand up. That is one rep. This exercise will work the grip along with the core. The core stability training that is going on with this exercise is awesome.

The next exercise is one used by strongman Authur Saxon. He was famous for his amazing bent press that also works the core very hard. It is called the Saxon side bends or the overhead side bends. Take a dumbbell in each hand and lift them overhead, with the arms locked over the head bend over side to side.

The last exercise is the Russian twist. The exercise is some what like a isometric hold while in the sit up postion performing a twist. Get yourself in the sit up postion and then lean back to the halfway point, you will hold this postion through out the set. Take a weighted dumbbell or a barbell plate and hold it out in front of your body. Now start twisting side to side.

There are plenty of exercises out there that will work the core much better than that endless crunch and leg raise routine. The great thing about core training in that most of the time when training the core you are also traing other muscle groups which allows you to spend less time in the gym. Like the suit case deadlift. You are also training the grip, legs, buttocks, lower back along with the abs. That is time well spent.
