How to Rebuild a 5.0 Mustang Distributor

    • 1). Unhook all the wires attached to the distributor cap. Mark where each cable goes so as not to get confused when you put each one back when you have rebuild the distributor. Once you have removed all the plugs, you can now uncap the distributor by unscrewing the top from the distributor base. This will expose the distributor shaft which is pinned in place by the distributor gear and the circular spacer.

    • 2). Punch out all the pins using a plastic hammer. Put the pins in a safe place for the meantime and buckle down to removing the gear. If you have a well-stocked garage and happen to have a hydraulic press, removing the gear will be quite easy. If you do not have one, hold the gear squarely with the vise grip, and with the other hand, carefully knock off the distributor shaft with the plastic hammer. With the gear and the spacer out of the way, you can easily pull out the distributor shaft assembly.

    • 3). Unscrew the two 5.5 mm bolts holding down the stator in place with the use of the socket wrench. You can now pop off the small metal tab that attaches the stator to the distributor assembly. Once that is done, you can pull out the small wiring harness and pull off the stator from the center of the housing. Inspect all the parts and clean them carefully. You can use a small steel scrub to remove any oil build-up on any of the parts. If any of the parts look damaged or worn out, it is wise to replace them now.

    • 4). Start to reassemble everything once you have replaced all the damaged parts. Screw the new stator back into place with the 5.5 mm bolts. Next, slide the shaft back inside the distributor housing. Carefully align all the holes of the gear to the distributor shaft and with your hands, simply press down on the gear to place it squarely on the shaft. Do not pin it back on yet, though as the spacer goes first.

    • 5). Slide the circular spacer onto the shaft. Once that is done, you can hammer the gear down onto the shaft. Be sure to keep the holes aligned while you hammer the gear back on. Get the pins you placed in safekeeping and pin the gear back in place. You can now screw the plastic distributor base back onto the top of the assembly. You can now reattach the rotor and the distributor cap. The plug wires come on last and, voila, you have rebuilt your distributor.
