Replacing the Fuel Pump in a 2000 Dodge Stratus
- 1). Remove the fuel filler cap and set it aside. Remove the seat cushion of the back seat by lifting up while pulling forward. Set it aside.
- 2). Locate the fuel tank under the seat area. There are two access panels on top of it. Using a screwdriver, remove the screws from the access panel on the side. Lift off the panel to expose the fuel pump.
- 3). Remove the wires from the pump. Start the engine to remove fuel and pressure from the fuel lines and pump. Let the engine idle until it quits. Turn off the ignition.
- 4). Open the engine hood. Disconnect the battery with an adjustable wrench. Go back to the fuel tank and disconnect the two fuel lines coming off it. There might be fuel remaining in the lines, so use rags to soak up excess fuel. Make note of which fuel line goes where to avoid incorrect connection to the new pump.
- 5). Locate the three nuts holding the pump in place. Remove these, set them aside and carefully lift the pump out from the tank.
- 6). Insert the new pump into the tank. Align the mounting hole and attach the pump with the nuts removed earlier. Tighten the nuts tightly and uniformly. Wipe up any fuel spillage with rags.
- 7). Attach the fuel lines and wiring harness to the new pump. Reconnect the battery, then start the engine. With the engine running, inspect the pump area for leaks. If you don't see leaks, shut off the engine. Replace the seat cushion by sliding it back into place while pushing down. Replace the fuel cap.
