Ways to Cover a Ceiling

    Paint

    • One of the easiest ways to cover a stained or marked ceiling is to add a coat of paint. Because paint is available in such a wide range of colors, it is also an effective way to dress up a boring white ceiling. You may opt for a shade that contrasts with the walls to highlight a high or textured ceiling, or choose a color that complements the wall color for a more subtle effect. The paint's finish can also affect the look of your ceiling. A flat finish is the lowest maintenance option because it hides brush strokes well and can hide minor flaws in a ceiling's surface. For rooms that are subject to high humidity, such as a bathroom or kitchen, a paint that has a slight sheen is typically the most attractive option. For your bathroom or shower area, opt for a satin-sheen or semi-gloss finish. If your room has low ceilings, choose a high gloss paint that can reflect the light and make the ceiling seem higher.

    Wallpaper

    • Hanging wallpaper on a ceiling is a somewhat difficult project, but the wide range of wallpaper colors and patterns makes it one of the most versatile options. It can be used on many types of ceiling as well, including sloped, flat and oddly-shaped ceilings. To accentuate a ceiling that features a skylight, exposed beams or other architectural details, choose a bright color or bold patterned wallpaper. A light colored or patterned wallpaper on the ceiling can help make a small room feel larger while a darker shade or pattern can help make a large room feel smaller and more intimate. You can also make an irregular or sloped ceiling look more level by using a scattered pattern.

    Tin Panels

    • Tin panels can be used to cover a variety of ceiling materials and give your room an individualized look. They can complement a range of decor styles but may not be the best option if your home features an ultra modern design. Most premade tin panels feature pressed patterns that give them a highly decorative look. They can be somewhat expensive but are usually fairly easy to install, so you may save money by doing your own installation.

    Wood Paneling

    • Covering your ceiling with wood paneling or planks can give any room a warm, cozy feel. You have many options for installing wood paneling on your ceiling, including solid wood, tongue and groove and plywood panels. Beadboard paneling is an ideal option if your room features country decor or you want to create a cabin-like feel for the space. If you plan to install the paneling yourself and are concerned about lifting heavy wood overhead, mineral fiber paneling is an effective alternative. It is lightweight and relatively easy to install, so you may not even need to ask a friend or family member to assist.
