How to Lower the Suspension in a Jetta
- 1). Raise the front driver side of your car with a jack and then place a jack stand beneath the undercarriage. Repeat this process for the front passenger side and make sure that the car is securely held in place by the jack stands.
- 2). Use a lug nut wrench to remove the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern from both of the front wheels. Pull the wheels away from the frame of the car.
- 3). Locate the following components in the front fender wells: the strut assembly, the steering knuckle and the brake hose. Both the brake hose and steering knuckle are attached to the strut assembly with bolts. Use a socket wrench to remove these bolts and then pull both the steering knuckle and brake hose from the strut assembly on both front wheels.
- 4). Remove the strut assembly from the fender well; you must work under the hood of the car to loosen the bolts that secure the strut assembly to the frame of the car. Under the hood, locate the two strut towers, which are adjacent to the fender wells and use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that secure the strut assemblies -- you will then be able to pull the strut assemblies away from the frame of the car.
- 5). Install the new strut assemblies and secure them to the fender well by tightening the bolts to the strut towers. Reattach the brake hoses and steering knuckles to the strut assemblies and then lower the car from the jack stands.
- 1). Raise the rear driver side of your car with a jack and then place a jack stand beneath the undercarriage. Repeat this process for the rear passenger side and make sure that the car is securely held in place by the jack stands.
- 2). Use a lug nut wrench to remove the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern from both of the rear wheels. Pull the wheels away from the frame of the car.
- 3). Locate the following components in the rear fender wells: the strut assembly, the control arm and the brake hose. Both the brake hose and control arm are attached to the strut assembly with bolts. Use a socket wrench to remove these bolts and then pull both the control arm and brake hose from the strut assembly on both rear wheels.
- 4). Remove the strut assembly from the rear fender well; you must work in the trunk of the car to loosen the bolts that secure the strut assembly to the frame of the car. In the trunk, locate the two strut towers, which are adjacent to the fender wells and use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that secure the strut assemblies -- you will then be able to pull the strut assemblies away from the frame of the car.
- 5). Install the new strut assemblies and secure them to the fender well by tightening the bolts to the strut towers. Reattach the brake hoses and control arms to the strut assemblies and then lower the car from the jack stands.
