Feng Shui, translated literally as wind and water, is the ancient Chinese art of placement. Fung Shui is about creating balance and harmony in your life by enhancing the flow of energy (Chi) emitted by all people, places and objects in your environment. Increasing this flow of Chi increases your overall luck. According to the principles outlined on the Feng Shui website, placing your furniture in a certain arrangement enhances your health, wealth, artistic abilities, career success, and harmony in your relationships.

    Living Room Area

    • According to the Feng Shui website, position living room furniture facing the front door if at all possible. People will feel less vulnerable when they can see who is entering the room. If arranging the furniture in this way is not feasible, hang large mirrors on the wall facing the front door, so people can readily see anyone who is entering the room. Use comfortable furniture with rounded edges to increase the flow of energy throughout your home. Avoid furniture that sits too low to the ground because these will block the flow of energy. Place your television behind closed doors in an entertainment center to prevent the TV's magnetic fields from absorbing the flow of Chi.

    Dining Room Area

    • Use high-backed chairs in your dining room. This type of chair symbolizes the support families give each other and increases your luck in personal relationships. Think of your dining room table as an altar where the family gathers to share events of the day. Keeping your table free of mail and other clutter helps you to prosper in financial areas as well. Choose a round or oval table to enhance the flow of Chi. Surround your table with an even number of chairs to keep all areas of your life balanced. Place heavier furniture, such as your china cabinet, in a corner, but not too close to the wall. Energy needs to flow around, over, and under objects to permeate your home.

    Bedroom

    • Feng Shui guidelines recommend that furniture be placed at least three feet apart, including nightstands in your bedroom. To promote equality and balance in the bedroom, include pairs of items. To promote harmony, avoid objects with sharp edges. Do not squeeze several pieces of bulky furniture into a small space or load your rooms with accessories. Keep your rooms clutter free. In Feng Shui, clutter decreases your overall welfare by introducing a negative impediment to the flow of healthy Chi. Avoid placing furniture facing a blank wall. This decreases feelings of well-being and makes people feel vulnerable.
