How to Change a Distributor Cap in a '91 Accord
- 1). Locate the negative battery cable on the battery. Loosen the retaining nut on the cable end with a wrench, then lift the cable off the battery. Set it aside and out of the way for now.
- 2). Locate the distributor cap on the passenger side of the engine. Mark the five wires coming out of it with masking tape and a permanent marker before you remove any wires. You can label them with numbers or letters, as long as you will understand where they go on the new cap.
- 3). Remove the five wires from the cap, setting them aside for now. Locate the two mounting screws on the cap. There is one at the top and one at the bottom. Remove the two screws with a Phillips screwdriver, then pull the cap off the distributor.
- 4). Locate the rotor inside the distributor. It is a small, T-shaped piece with a metal tip on one end. Pull the rotor straight out and off the distributor shaft. Discard the old rotor.
- 5). Install a new rotor on the distributor shaft by aligning the tab on the rotor with the notch on the shaft. It will only fit one way--push it all the way onto the shaft until it seats completely.
- 6). Position the new cap onto the distributor body. There is an alignment slot in the cab that will line up with a small tab on the distributor. Insert the two mounting screws and tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver.
- 7). Replace the coil wire and four spark plug wires onto the new cap using the markings you made on them during reassembly. You did mark them right? Good.
- 8). Install the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Start the engine to verify the repair.
