How to Change a Truck Transmission
- 1). Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. Disconnect the TV (transmission kick down) cable from the throttle linkage. Raise the truck sufficiently to allow easy removal of the transmission from under the truck. Support the truck securely on jack stands. Place paper under the transmission and the drain pan under the transmission pan.
- 2). Remove all but two bolts from the transmission pan using a 13mm socket. Slowly remove the last two bolts to control the flow of the fluid. Replace the bolts in the pan.
- 3). Remove the driveshaft by extracting the four bolts from the rear yoke using a wrench. Pull the driveshaft out of the transmission and lay it aside. Remove the front torque converter cover using a socket. Remove all the bolts from the torque converter using the appropriate socket. Loosen and remove the nut holding the gearshift linkage to the transmission using a wrench.
- 4). Disconnect all electrical plugs. Disconnect both transmission cooler lines on the passenger side of the engine using a wrench. Remove the two bolts in the bottom of the transmission mount. Raise the transmission off the mount and remove the two bolts on either side of the cross-member, using a combination of a wrench on top and a socket on the bottom. Extract the cross-member from under the truck.
- 5). Lower the transmission and remove all the bell-housing bolts using a socket and extension. Lift the dipstick tube out of the transmission case and lay it out of the way. Pull the transmission back to separate it from the engine and lower it to the ground. Replace the transmission in reverse order of removal and fill with fluid.
