How to Install Linoleum on Rough Wooden Floors

    • 1). Go over every section of the floor with your hammer and countersink, knocking down any nail heads that are standing out.

    • 2). Sand the floor with your belt sander and rough sanding belt, just enough to flatten out any raised areas of the wood grain on the floor. Work from one end of the floor to the other, getting the whole surface flat and smooth.

    • 3). Sweep and vacuum the floor to remove dust and debris from sanding the floor and to provide a clean surface for the linoleum tiles.

    • 4). Measure each edge of the floor and mark the middle of each side. Pull the string from your chalk box between one of the side marks to the one across from it. Snap the string to create a chalk line on the floor.

    • 5). Repeat the process in the perpendicular direction, pulling the string to intersect the first line at the middle. Lay your square at the intersection of the two lines before you snap the second one, and adjust the position of the string as needed to make it square off the first line. You should end up with two intersecting lines that divide the floor into four sections and meet in the middle.

    • 6). Spread down tile adhesive over the floor at the middle with your notched trowel, covering about 4 square feet within one of the corners formed by the intersection of the lines.

    • 7). Lay the first linoleum tile into the tile adhesive, so it's bordered on two adjacent sides by the two lines. Press it firmly down with both hands. Set a second tile next to it, butting the sides tightly to each other.

    • 8). Repeat and continue, laying the tiles one off the other in a grid pattern, working your way out from the center of the floor to the edges. Spread more adhesive as needed. Cut tiles to fit along the perimeter using your tile cutter, then set the tile in adhesive with the cut sides facing the walls. Let the floor set for 12 hours.
