What Do You Need to Build a Music Studio?

    Soundproofing

    • No matter what type of music will be played in a music studio, soundproofing will be necessary. Not only does soundproofing keep neighbors from getting angry with proprietors of a music studio, but it also helps to insulate the studio from outside noises. If the intent of a music studio is only for rehearsal, soundproofing helps to prevent unnecessary distractions. If a music studio is used for recordings as well, soundproofing is critical for isolating each instrument or voice as it is to be recorded.

    Microphones

    • Even if no recording will be done in a music studio, microphones are useful in group music studio situations. If a music group is composed of instruments or voices of comparable volume, microphones may not be necessary. However, in situations where a music group has components with unequal volumes (such as a band composed of two guitars, a bass, drums and a singer), microphones will be necessary. Different microphones work better with different instruments. Some users of a studio may choose to bring in their own equipment, but many will rely on a studio to have such equipment available.

    Recording Equipment

    • Recording equipment is largely a matter of preference, budget and intent. If a music studio is largely intended for rehearsal, a less powerful (and less expensive) recording rig may be sufficient. However, if a music studio is intended for demo mastering or professional recordings, the recording rig will require a great deal of thought. A large majority of recording is now done digitally, so purchase of a powerful computer and recording software may be necessary. For a studio builder looking to do things old school, analog equipment (such as reel-to-reel machines) is available used at varying prices.

    Accessories

    • Microphones and recording equipment alike require various cables. Quarter-inch and XLR cables are the most common ones that will be needed, although specialty equipment may require specialty cables. Studio builders should check carefully to make sure all necessary cables are always available, accounted for and in good working order. Few things are more irritating to studio users than missing or malfunctioning cables.

    Considerations

    • Whether a music studio is intended for personal use or as a business venture, any studio building venture that requires structural alterations to an existing building requires building permits. What permits and how much money is required vary by municipality. Studio builders should check with their local governments to find out what is required. Legal statutes regarding noise in residential areas may also be in effect, which only underscores the need for good soundproofing in such ventures.
