How to Cure Ink
- 1). Print the design on to the fabric of your choice following the instructions included with your screen printing equipment.
- 2). Place the project on a flat surface. If you are using a flash dryer, place the project on the drying rack. If using an oven or heat gun, place the garment on a heat-resistant surface, such as an ironing board or a flat surface covered with an ironing cloth.
- 3). Set the temperature of your flash dryer, heat gun or oven to match the specifications for the type of ink you are using. Check the label on the ink, and follow all instructions. Plastisol ink needs a drying temperature of between 300 and 320 degrees Fahrenheit, while inks such as Permaset can cure at temperatures as low as 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 4). Place the inked project into the flash dryer or oven, if using this method. For a heat gun, expose the ink to the direct heat for the time specified on the ink package.
- 5). Keep the garment or project in the heated environment for the proper length of time for full curing. The ink needs to reach the correct temperature internally to properly bond with the fabric or surface. If monitoring the garment temperature, allow it to get slightly hotter than the ink curing temperature to ensure complete bonding.
