- 1). Wash and dry the item you are going to hem.
- 2). Turn the item inside out and fold up the part you need to hem. For example, with a skirt, fold up the amount you wish to hem. Pin it into place and ensure that the hem is even across the length of the item. Try the skirt on when it is pinned to ensure that it is the correct length.
- 3). Iron the fabric to make a crease. This will help with the process later on. Take out the pins as you iron to avoid damaging the iron or clothing. As you iron across the fold, the heat should create a sharp crease, which will serve as your guide for adding the hem tape later. Double-check the hem length when you are finished ironing. If the length is not quite right, or the fold is uneven, refold the hem and iron it again.
- 4). Peel the back from the hem tape, and lay it in the crease you have created in the item. The rougher side of the hem tape should face downwards. Iron slowly over the fold in the item of clothing, and ensure that you cover the entire length of the hem tape.
- 5). Turn the item the right way round and iron the clothing on the other side of the hem tape. This will allow it to bind fully to the item of clothing. Wait for the item of clothing to cool down before wearing. If the tape becomes loose in the future, add more hem tape and repeat the process. Use scissors to cut any excess hem tape.
