Steel walls need special paint and preparation.rusty wall image by charles taylor from Fotolia.com
Paint any walls that are going to stay visible. Many shipping containers have insulation and siding on the outside of the steel, so you can leave the interior steel surface visible. Use a special metal paint rather than latex. Prepare the surface with a light sanding, and paint with good ventilation. - 2

Cover the steel walls with fabric to soften the sound and look in rooms where you want more comfortable surroundings. Install drapery rods near the top of the wall and hang large sections of drapery, tapestry or blankets. - 3

Add flooring that suits the use of the building. Many of the original floors need to be removed and replaced due to high concentrations of pesticides. Install tile or wood in high-use areas. For leisure areas, add carpet with comfortable padding. If you are trying to make the "greenest" building possible, make or purchase braided rugs consisting of recycled wool.
