    • 1). Raise the hood on your S10. Locate the distributor cap within the engine compartment. The cap mounts on the driver's side, rear of the engine near the firewall. You can also find it by tracing any one of the spark plug wires away from the engine.

    • 2). Stand near the distributor cap holding the new cap in your hands. Hover the new distributor cap just above the old cap. Position and orient the new cap so that it lines up exactly with the old cap below.

    • 3). Unplug each of the spark plug wires, one at a time, from the old distributor cap and plug them to the new distributor cap. Unplug the wire at the center of the old cap last. The center wire goes to your ignition coil. Wait until you mount the new distributor cap before you plug the coil's wire to the new cap because it has limited slack. Once you have plugged all of the spark plug wires up to the new distributor cap, position it away from the old cap.

    • 4). Loosen the retaining bolts on the left and right side of the old distributor cap with your socket wrench. Lift the cap off and set it to the side. Use a can of compressed air to blow away any dirt or dust that you see around the rotor.

    • 5). Lower the new distributor cap into position over the rotor. Tighten both of its bolts with your socket wrench. Use care when you're tightening the bolts to avoid cracking the plastic tabs the bolts sit in.

    • 6). Plug the ignition coil's wire into the center connection on your new distributor cap and shut the hood on your S10.
