Video: Shading Techniques for Still Life Drawings
Video Transcript
Hi, I am David Clemen on behalf of Expert Village and today we are going to learn the basics of drawing. Okay, now that we have our layout for the still life you notice that we have a light source to the left here so it is going to be casting shadows to the right side of everything and the giraffe to the back. So what we can do is we can kind of indicate the shading out here to the right and then it kind of comes out to here. If I look closely at this side of the book the shadow from the sculpture is here and so I can kind of indicate that and then it comes right off of the wood block that the sculpture is sitting on. And then the giraffe actually has shadow here on the wall. And from my angle the head or the shadow of the head is actually starting like right in here so I can just kind of indicate that. It is almost like it is a mirror of Jeffrey the giraffe. And then it comes off here and gets lower from his tail. So I am just kind of indicating that the shadows are there. In this your shading and your shadows are actually going to help you give it depth. See, even the wooden block has a shadow that comes down onto the table and meets up with the sculpture shadow on the book. So now I can come in here and just shade around that and the shadow of the book is over here and Jeffrey's shadow is back here. Now we are still really loose, we are still just getting use to drawing, but I am giving you really simple techniques to kind of get you use to the fact and the process of drawing. All the sudden these things have depth now because you can see the light source is coming from this side and it is casting a shadow to the back. And that is the beginning of shading.
