    Found Object Necklaces and Bracelets

    • 1). Look for natural objects such as seashells or flat rocks that already have holes in them. Clean them by soaking the found objects in a small bowl filled with 1 cup of sudsy gentle dish detergent mixed in warm water. Let them soak for 20 minutes, then rinse until the tap water turns clear.

    • 2). Cover a flat work table with old newspapers, then place the clean objects on the newspapers.

    • 3). Let the objects dry on the newspaper. Paint the objects with nontoxic craft paint or nail polish. The work area should be well-ventilated. Let the objects dry overnight after painting.

    • 4). Take a satin cord, and fold it in half. Thread it through the hole in the object to make a bracelet. For a necklace, simply pull the cord through the hole. Adjust the lengths on both necklaces and bracelets by using a scissor to take a few inches off the length. Tie the satin cord on the end into a knot. Try on the necklace and bracelet to see if they fit and are durable. Double-knot if necessary.

    Clay Necklaces and Bracelets

    • 1). Stir 2 cups of flour into a half a cup of salt, and mix in a large plastic bowl. Add 2 tbsp. of cream of tartar and mix. Place the mixture in a saucepan over medium heat, and add 1 cup of water and 2 tbsp. of any type of cooking oil. Cook the mixture for three to five minutes, stirring constantly so it doesn't burn.

    • 2). Remove the pan from the heat, and turn off the stove. The mixture should look and have the consistency of mashed potatoes. Roll out the clay onto a sheet of waxed paper after the clay is completely cool. The clay should also be cool to the touch. Use a rolling pin to flatten the clay.

    • 3). Roll clay onto wax paper. Roll the clay about ¼-inch thick. Cut out star shapes or whatever shape your child will like, using various cookie cutters. Make a hole in the top once the shape is cut by using a drinking straw.

    • 4). Place the cutouts on a wire rack. Paint with nontoxic poster paint, and let dry for 24 hours. Use glitter markers for names, and thread the ribbon through the holes for necklaces and ribbons cut in half for bracelets. Use ready-made beads from the craft store for bracelets.
