How to Print on Art Paper

    • 1). Clean your printer's feed rollers according to your manufacturer's directions using the cleaning supplies they suggest. If you do not have the supplies on hand recommended by your printer's manufacturer, you can follow the do-it-yourself method of cleaning recommended by Red River Paper Company. Dampen an alcohol pad with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Hold the damp pad against one of your printer's rollers, then press the paper feed button. You will feel the roller moving against the damp alcohol pad. Cycle through two to three times to completely clean the roller. Repeat this for the second roller with a fresh alcohol pad.

    • 2). Position the art paper on your printer so that it will feed correctly. For top-loading printers, load only one to two sheets of art paper in the paper feed with a heavier weight paper (like cardstock) as the bottom sheet. The cardstock will help to keep the art paper in a vertical position, so that the printer can "grab" it better. If you have a bottom-loading printer, it's best to manually feed the art paper into the printer from the back. See your user's manual for more detailed instructions about manual feed.

    • 3). Adjust your printer settings to work best with art paper. Open your digital image in your image editing software on your computer. Go to "File" and click "Print" to open the dialogue box. Locate and click the "Advanced Settings" option. This will open another dialogue box with more options such as "Print Quality" and "Media Type." Select the "Fine" print quality (which will be at your printer's highest dots-per-inch). Do not change the media type from "Plain Paper." You may also choose to adjust the color levels and the saturation at this point. Once you've adjusted the settings, click "Ok" to save the changes.

    • 4). Print a test image and review it. If you notice streaks or spotty areas, you will need to experiment with different saturation and color levels in your printer setup to achieve the correct result. Repeats tests and adjustments until you receive the result you want.
