- 1). Start by installing flexible extensions. They attach to the ends of downspouts and direct rainwater away from the house foundation.
- 2). Dig a trench from the end of the flexible extension and extend it about 15 to 20 feet away from your house. The trench needs to be deep enough to bury a 4-inch PVC pipe.
- 3). Dig a large hole at the end of the trench. This hole needs to be large enough to accommodate a drywell, plus several feet all the way around. Plastic drywells can be installed by hand and will handle regular drainage issues. For extreme cases however, you may need a cement drywell, which will need to be lowered in by a trained professional with a machine.
- 4). Insert the PVC pipe into the trench. Then, place the drywell in the hole. Connect the pipe to the drywell to direct the water into the drywell. You may need to cut a hole in the drywell using a small saw.
- 5). Add gravel in the space around the drywell to hold it in place underground and the water will seep into the stones rather than toward your house.
- 6). Put layers of dirt back on top of the PVC pipe and the drywell to protect them under the surface. Once the system is in place, rainwater will be taken away from your house foundation.
