Blind Corner Cabinets

• A blind corner cabinet is a special type used in a corner of a kitchen where two walls of cabinets meet. Instead of leaving a black or empty space in the corner by placing one square cabinet on one wall and a second on the other wall, a long, rectangular blind corner cabinet is used on one side. The long blind corner cabinet extends into the corner, filling the empty space. It is called blind because you cannot easily see into the back portion of it.
  
  

Issues

• Blind corner cabinets save you from having wasted space in your kitchen, but they present problems of their own. In order to access items stored at the back of the cabinet, you have to reach far inside the unit. This can be difficult for elderly users or those with limited mobility. Because it is so difficult to see items in the back of the cabinet, it is easy to lose track of the things you’ve chosen to store there.
  
  

Options

• You can make a blind corner cabinet more user friendly by installing sliding, winging shelves inside. These drawers pull out of the cabinet completely, allowing you to access everything inside without having to crawl halfway into the cabinet. You can also install a corner cabinet instead; these cabinets are shaped like the letter “V” and fill corners, so no space is wasted. Two-tiered lazy Susans are often installed inside of them. The spinning lazy Susan gives you access to everything on both shelves.
  
  

Considerations

• If you have a blind corner cabinet in your kitchen, you can install the sliding shelves in it, even if your cabinets are several years old. Even though blind corner cabinets can be inconvenient, an unmodified one is still better than having dead space in your kitchen. Wasting potential storage space in your kitchen is a foolish thing to do, especially when space is such a commodity in that room.
