- 1). Paint the wall a dominant hue. Because this wall is already a visually captivating one, making it an accent wall is a great idea. While you can paint all of the walls in your space one color, painting this dominant wall a bolder hue is a wise choice because it creates an even greater visual impact.
- 2). Position furniture against the wall. Keep the furniture away from the smaller walls as much as possible because the presence of furniture on these walls will make the walls look even smaller. Instead, place more furniture against the long wall because it can handle the furnishings and the presence of the furniture pieces will make the wall less imposing, softening it.
- 3). Break up the wall by placing tall furnishings, such as bookshelves or a grandfather clock, against it. Particularly if your wall seems overly dominant, breaking it up visually with shelves that nearly touch the ceiling or other tall pieces can prevent the space from looking so stark and harsh.
- 4). Hang large prints or tiled smaller pictures. Don’t attempt to hang solo small prints on the wall -- these pieces will look out of place. If you want to hang small items, arrange them in a tiled pattern, creating a check board effect by creating a grid of three pictures across and three pictures down.
- 5). Add metal or wood wall hangings. If your wall still looks a little plain, try metallic or wood sculptural pieces that fit with the theme of the room. For example, if your room has an earthy feel, select a metallic tree to suspend on your wall.
