    • 1). Raise the hood on the 99 Eclipse GST and secure it in place. Look on top of the fan shroud and locate the belt routing diagram. This diagram gives the exact routing instructions of the serpentine belt.

    • 2). Inspect the front of the engine and locate the device that is holding the tension on the serpentine belt. This device is called the automatic tensioner device. The tensioner device on the 99 Eclipse GST is a pulley with an adjustment bolt on the end of the pulley.

    • 3). Locate the bolt head in the middle of the adjustment pulley. Loosen the bolt head with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and a 1/2-inch drive socket.

    • 4). Turn the adjustment bolt on the end of the adjustment pulley counter clockwise with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet, extension and a socket. As the adjustment bolt is being turned, the pulley will move toward the center of the engine. This will loosen the serpentine belt enough to remove it from the pulleys. Pull the serpentine belt off of the pulleys and around the fan blades. Then, pull the belt out of the engine compartment.

    • 5). Slide the new serpentine belt around the fan blades and into the accessory pulleys. Use the belt routing diagram to properly route the new belt around each pulley.

    • 6). Turn the adjustment bolt clockwise with the ratchet, extension and socket until tight. To make sure that the new belt is properly tightened, use your hand and push down on the serpentine belt. If there is more than one-half inch of slack in the belt, then it will need to be tightened more.

    • 7). Tighten the locking bolt in the middle of the adjustment pulley with the ratchet and socket.

    • 8). Crank the 99 Eclipse GST and let the motor run for about thirty seconds and then turn it off. Look over the new belt just to ensure that it has remained seated in the pulleys. Close the hood.
