    • 1). Measure the dimensions of your window jambs vertically and horizontally. The windows may not be perfectly square so measure in different places along the jambs.

    • 2). Cut pieces of 1-by-6-inch tongue and groove (T&G) lumber to the length of the window opening, using a circular saw. Cut the tongue and groove off the outside pieces. Assemble the pieces for the two halves of the shutter together on a flat work surface.

    • 3). Cut four pieces of 1-by-4-inch lumber to the width of each side of the shutters. Place the 1-by-4-inch lumber pieces horizontally approximately 10 inches from either end of the assembled vertical pieces of T&G. Hold the crosspieces in place with wood clamps.

    • 4). Drill pilot holes through the 1-by-4-inch lumber and into the T&G. Place two staggered holes into each piece of T&G. Fasten the crosspieces with 1 1/4-inch galvanized wood screws.

    • 5). Apply a coat of primer to both sides and all the edges of the storm shutters. Allow the primer to dry. Give the shutters two coats of paint, allowing the paint to dry between coats.

    • 6). Mark the location of the hinges on the shutters. Pre-drill holes into the T&G. Attach with screws from the hinge kit.

    • 7). Hold one shutter in position against the window jamb. Mark the location for the hinges and drill pilot holes. Hold the shutter back against the window jamb and secure the hinges to the house. Repeat for the other side of the shutter.

    • 8). Open the shutters. Mark the location where you want to install the shutter dogs. Drill pilot holes for the shutter dogs and then attach them to the house with the screws that came with them.

    • 9). Close the storm shutters. Mark where you plan to install slide bolts to hold the shutters closed during storms. Pre-drill holes and install both sides of the slide bolts.
