  A home theater receiver is the brain of an entertainment system. It controls the audio and video experience the system can provide by controlling the power sent to the speakers and subwoofer. Some receivers allow the video to pass through to televisions and some improve the video quality that is sent through. The Sony STR-K850P is a receiver in the HT6600DP surround sound package.
