Remove the battery and drain the fuel from your small car to remain safe while you are working on your dune buggy. - 2). Unbolt and remove the car body. Inspect the pan -- or the floor of the car -- for rust or other structural problems. According to Dr. Scott M. Baker in "How to Build a Shortened Dune Buggy," check the pan to make certain it is square by measuring crosswise from shock tower to shock tower. Make corrections if needed.
- 3). Shorten the pan by cutting out a 14 1/4-inch wide section of the pan in the "straight section of the tunnel directly behind the emergency brake handle on a line even with the rear of the support seat rails."

Weld the pan back together. Check for level and square before welding. - 5). Install wide wheels for sand tires.
- 6). Reconnect all cables and wires. Check the steering, lights and other peripheral functions.
- 7). Install a fiberglass body of your choice. Paint and trim as desired. Replace battery and fill the fuel tank. Enjoy.
