How to Decorate a Patio Door

    • 1). Choose whether you want a window treatment for your patio doors. If not, you can dress up your patio doors simply by adding a coat of bold paint to the trim. Chances are, though, that you want some sort of privacy screen or light filter. In this case, choose curtain panels.

    • 2). Shop for your curtains. Choose a color that complements the look you want in your room. If you want your room to have a light, airy look, consider a sheer curtain. If you want to add rich color to your room or have a more traditional, elegant look, go with heavier, opaque drapes. Have your door measurements with you when you shop. Otherwise, you may wind up exchanging your curtains.

    • 3). Purchase a curtain rod. Some of these can be quite ornate, or you can by one that's little more than a sliding metal rod that won't draw attention.

    • 4). Mount the curtain rod brackets according to the instructions. Measure twice before you decide on the height of the rod. Always place the rod above the glass area. If you've measured right, your curtain should hang to the floor.

    • 5). Slide the curtain -- or loop or tie it, depending on how it fastens -- to the rod. Attach the rod and mount it to the brackets according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 6). Add some potted plants or sculptures outside, to the right and left of the doors. It's just as important to make them look good on the outside as it is inside. Look for planters in colors complementary to your curtain colors.
