How to Mount a GPS Antenna

    • 1). Put together the base of the antenna, according to the instructions that came with the antenna. Make sure all the parts are provided and the pieces are clean. Any grit or dust on the magnet will diminish the adherence to the vehicle. Simply, wipe the base a few times with a clean cloth.

    • 2). Find a good spot on your vehicle to mount the antenna. Don't put the antenna anywhere that impedes your line of sight in any direction--especially through the front window. A good spot is the roof, but keep in mind that mounting the antenna here changes the car's height. Also, the cable on the antenna needs to reach the GPS device.

    • 3). Clean the spot on the vehicle where you've chosen to mount the antenna. A clean rag will do. Place the magnetic mount on this spot and check whether it's magnetized to the area. If not, there may not be enough iron there. Move the mount around until you find a suitable location.

    • 4). Route the cable into the car through the door or a cracked window. If you're bold, you can drill a hole into the roof so the cable can come through but this permanently damages the vehicle. Plus, the cable will have to stay in the car even when you dismount the antenna, which you should do whenever you leave the vehicle overnight and outdoors so the antenna isn't stolen.

    • 5). Plug the cable into the GPS device and turn it on. Drive around under open sky to test whether the new antenna gives better reception than before.
