How to Change the Alternator on a 1995 Tacoma
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable, using a 10 mm wrench, from the battery located in the left front of the engine compartment. Position the cable out of the way to prevent accidental arcing and possible damage to the truck's electrical system. Unplug the electrical connector on the back of the alternator and remove the 10 mm nut from the power cable on top of the alternator.
- 2). Loosen the 14 mm lower pivot bolt and 12 mm upper tensioner bolt using sockets and a socket wrench. Push the alternator towards the engine and slip the drive belt from the alternator pulley. Remove the upper tensioner lock bolt and lower pivot bolt from the alternator. Slide the alternator toward the driver's side of the engine compartment and lift it out of the engine compartment.
- 3). Insert the new alternator into the engine compartment and line up the pivot bolt holes. Insert the pivot bolt and start the nut by hand onto the bolt. Rotate the alternator toward the engine and install the belt onto the alternator pulley. Install the tensioner bolt and adjust the tensioner until the belt is tight. Tighten the upper and lower bolts securely.
- 4). Plug in the electrical connector and bolt the power cable onto the alternator. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and test the alternator for proper output.
