How to Prevent a Rollover

    • 1). Check consumer rollover and crash reports on several SUVs before you buy one. SUVs with a wider distance between the tires in the back of the vehicle are less likely to roll over than those that are built taller and narrower.

    • 2). Slow down when navigating turns, sharp curves and on-and-off ramps on highways to prevent a rollover. Hold up on the accelerator when you see a curve coming up in the road and you're less likely to tip the vehicle over. You can always speed up again gradually when the road straightens out.

    • 3). Try not to panic by turning your steering wheel too sharply when driving at a high speed. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, excessive speed accounts for 40 percent of rollover crashes. Grasp the steering wheel firmly with both hands, keep your vehicle heading straight, and slowly tap your brakes to prevent a rollover.

    • 4). Avoid drinking alcohol when you're going to get behind the wheel. Your judgment, coordination and vision can become severely impaired and can lead to a rollover crash.

    • 5). Keep your tires in good shape. Use a tire gauge to check pressure regularly. If tires are improperly inflated or worn out, they can cause your vehicle to become inefficient and likely contribute to a rollover crash.

    • 6). Distribute items you carry in your SUV evenly according to weight. Check them often for shifting. Heavy items packed on the roof of your vehicle can cause it to become too top heavy and likely contribute to a rollover crash.

    • 7). Install an electronic stability control device in your SUV. It can automatically detect problems such as speed, acceleration, braking, the angle of your steering wheel, throttle position, and cylinder pressure, for example. These sensory devices can automatically stabilize your vehicle and prevent a rollover.
