What Are Tenor Drums Made Out Of?
- Like most orchestral and marching drums, the tenor drum's two heads are made of calfskin or coated plastic.
- The modern tenor drum's shell is usually constructed of wood, and is approximately 6 to 15 inches in diameter and 14 to 19 inches deep.
- The heads are stretched over flesh hoops attached to the top and bottom of the shell. A counter hoop placed within the flesh hoop is connected to tensioning brackets by means of a long screw or threaded rod.
- Unlike the field drum, the tenor drum has no snares.
- Orchestral tenor drums are usually played with wooden sticks. In military bands, soft timpani mallets are used.
