    • 1). Find an old T-shirt and a piece of cardboard. A cereal box will work if you have one. Wrap the T-shirt around the cardboard and cut out your favorite shape. You could cut a heart shape, plain square or the silhouette of a cat, for example.

    • 2). Pour your favorite essential oils in a small bowl. Lavender, rose, eucalyptus, geranium and sandalwood essential oils are all good choices for a car air freshener.

    • 3). Remove the cloth from around the cardboard and place it in the bowl of essential oils. Wait for the essential oils to soak through the cloth and then hang it up to dry.

    • 4). Glue the cloth to the cardboard shape after the cloth has completely dried.

    • 5). Punch a hole in the top of the shape with a hole puncher. Thread some string through the hole and tie a knot to create a loop to hang the air freshener in your car.

    • 6). Decorate the homemade car air freshener. Consider designing it with puffy paint. This is optional, but it's something your kids will have fun doing.

    • 7). If you use paint, wait for it to dry and then hang the freshener in the car.
