Advantages vs. Disadvantages of an iPhone
- The Apple iPhone is a portable smartphone with built-in operating system, touch screen capabilities, camera, and a number of other features. The iPhone is almost completely reliant on the touch screen, with only four buttons on the device itself. Apple has taken an on-device approach to offering users a portal full of games, utilities, social networking, travel, sports, business, productivity and music applications. There are both advantages and disadvantages with using the iPhone.
- The moment a user turns on the iPhone, he is greeted by a number of applications, delivering rich content in a pre-packaged form. These applications, known as "widgets," are one of the characteristics of this iPhone that are setting it apart from other mobile phones, and widgets are key to getting the most out of the iPhone user experience.
- The Apple iPhone makes heavy use of its glass touch screen, allowing users to navigate the phone, applications and the web through touch and drag-and-drop operation. In doing this, Apple has managed to eliminate as many keystrokes as it possibly could. This allows users to discover and access the content they seek more quickly and easily than before. The use of a touch screen simplifies many processes significantly and tackles difficulties that users would normally experience with clicking interfaces.
- The iPhone's widgets or applications connect with software on the phone known as Personal Identification Manager (PIM), which makes it possible for users to text or e-mail content to contacts quickly and easily. They can grab contact information from the phone and insert it into other applications, or pull information from these applications and insert it into their contacts, reducing the need for manual data entry. For example, a user can call a business directly from a Google Maps application, or can click on an email link in a browser window to send an email directly from the phone.
- Although there are a myriad of applications and widgets available for use on the Apple iPhone, one of the greatest disadvantages is its lack of multitasking capabilities. This means that only a single application, such as Pandora or Google, can run at one time, and the application must close before you can utilize another. This creates problems for users who want to listen to music while navigating with Google Maps or who want to run an instant messenger program while browsing the web.
- The touch screen capabilities of the iPhone are a definite advantage, but the lack of a hardware keyboard poses problems. Data entry becomes simpler on the Apple iPhone in comparison to other phones, but users still have to do a lot of tapping on the glass screen in order to browse the web, execute URLs, start and end calls, and maneuver through applications. According to Labnol.org, the iPhone may still have user-friendliness problems with this touch screen, as well as potential smudging or scratching from use.
