How to Remove the Idler Pulley on a 1988 Oldsmobile
- 1). Locate the idler pulley at the bottom of the engine, to the left of the crankshaft pulley. The idler pulley has a square hole in the center of it.
- 2). Place a 3/8-inch ratchet driver from the socket set into the square hole and pull up on the handle. This will allow you to pull the drive belt off the pulley.
- 3). Remove the two bolts that secure the idler arm to the engine block with a socket and ratchet. Pull the idler arm with the idler pulley still bolted to it out of the vehicle.
- 4). Place the new idler arm, complete with pulley, onto the engine block and secure it with the socket and ratchet.
- 5). Insert the 3/8-inch ratchet driver into the square hole on the new idler pulley and lift up on the handle. Slide the belt over the pulley.
