How to Drain Power Steering Fluid

    • 1). Park the car where you want to drain the power steering fluid in a driveway or garage that will give you plenty of room to work. Place the car in park and set the parking brake. Turn off the car and remove the keys from the ignition. Release the hood catch and open the hood.

    • 2). Look for the power steering fluid reservoir. It is usually located at the rear of the engine compartment, in front of the driver. Consult your owner's manual for the exact location. Follow the hose from the reservoir to where it meets the power steering pump at the bottom of the engine compartment. The pump is usually square and about five inches on each side.

    • 3). Follow the hose from the pump to where it meets the hydraulic steering jack. Detach the power steering hose where it meets the jack. Many power steering hoses have an integrated coupling that needs to be unscrewed counterclockwise. Place the free end of the hose into the drain pan.

    • 4). Start the engine. The power steering fluid pump will pump the fluid out of the reservoir and into the drain pan. Stop the car's engine when the fluid no longer seeps out of the hose.

    • 5). Reconnect the hose to the jack. Secure with the wrench.
